Guo Da Li (过大礼), also known as the "betrothal ceremony," is an important custom in Chinese weddings with a long history. This ritual signifies the groom's sincerity and affection towards the bride.
It usually takes place 15 to 20 days before the wedding, with the groom selecting an auspicious day to bring along betrothal gifts, including money, presents, and wedding pastries to the bride's family.
The Guo Da Li ceremony involves the exchange of gifts between the two families and serves as the official engagement day in traditional weddings. Whether it is the groom's family presenting gifts or the bride's family reciprocating, it demonstrates respect for both families and their parents.
The Guo Da Li ceremony upholds Chinese traditions and shows respect for family values. It also includes blessings for the couple's future happiness and well-being.
The entire process creates meaningful memories for the parents and strengthens the relationship between the two families.
After the groom's Guo Da Li ceremony, the bride's family will reciprocate on the same day by giving return gifts to the groom's family. The bride's family doesn't accept all the gifts from the groom's side but selects a portion to return as a gesture of gratitude.
The purpose of the return gifts is to express appreciation to the groom's family and demonstrate mutual respect. Through this exchange of gifts, both families convey their gratitude and respect for each other, symbolizing the merging of the two families and offering blessings.
This ceremony holds special significance for the newlywed couple and both families, emphasizing the connection and harmony between them.
